You’ve chosen a company you’re excited about, picked out your starter kit and made the decision to try your hand at network marketing! You’re floating on cloud nine, chin held high, shoulders back and you are ready to be a shooting star! Then you feel a little pit in the middle of your stomach – not the excited flit of butterflies, but more like a lead weight. The pit of fear. It stars to make you question, “What have I agreed to? I can’t do this! I have no idea what I’m doing! I made a mistake!”
I suffer from chronic remorse. I once brought a puppy back to the shelter within 2 hours of being home because he waddled away from me when I called him. The pit in my stomach said “He’s too independent!” – He did come back home with us and the sweetest little gentleman. What a mistake that would have been to miss out on all his love, personality, cuddles and silliness. If I had listened to the pit of fear, who knows where Pierre would be.
Don’t let fear take away this amazing opportunity you’ve just found for yourself. When you thought about network marketing, you started to dream of what it could bring into your life. Go back to that vision. Feel what it would be like to accomplish it – believe you are on your way. You deserve it! Saying “Yes” was a HUGE step in the right direction. So instead of fear, let’s lead with excitement – and move forward!
The key to network marketing is to take things one step at a time. Don’t try to learn every little thing before you start working your business. Don’t wait for your kit to arrive, don’t memorize the catalog or comp plan – don’t hold yourself back – instead, let yourself run forward!
My biggest advise – do not throw yourself a launch party. You will find success with your new business if you grow outside of your immediate network quickly. Think of it this way, many will not be interested, some will be busy, some won’t get back to you and some will say yes. You end up with 10 of your closest family and friends at your house, they all buy from you and the night is over. You did good sales, and are ready to rock this business! But who do you go to next? You’ve already exhausted your Who Do You Know List. What if instead, those 10 people who came over had said yes to hosting in the next month. You would have 10 parties on your calendar, and at each party you would have met 10 or more NEW contacts. THAT is how to grow your network fast.
My second big advise is – Do Not Post on Facebook about your new business! How many times have you seen the classic post? “I just started with a new company, who is going to host for me?” or “I’m looking for 2 people to join my team!” – There’s a lot wrong with these posts.
Social media is great, and can be a great tool in network marketing. But when you post to the masses a generic comment like that, you’re putting a wall between you and your contacts. What if instead, you make your Who Do You Know List; a list of everyone you know – family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, church, clubs, classes, people through your kids, service providers, etc. Think about each person on your list and think to yourself why this person would love your business? Are they looking for extra income? Are they the best hostess and love to entertain? Then apply your business to that thought.
“I was thinking about you because” are the strongest words when you pick up the phone. Tell your contact why you were thinking about them, share how excited you are, how much fun, easy and simple hosting or joining is. Make it personal. Now if that person had seen your generic post on Facebook before you called, how do you think they are going to feel when you say, “I was thinking of you”. I’d be like, “No you weren’t!! You posted to 548 of your Facebook friends!” – Make it personal. After you’ve physically called every single person you know – then go to town on social media (without annoying everyone – find balance).
In your first week, stick to the basics, stick to the training your home office and upline provides you. The big secret is – the Best Practices they share actually do work! Pick up the phone and start sharing your excitement with everyone within 24 hours of joining your company. The quicker you feel success, the more excitement you will create! Keep it simple, be ready for the “No’s” and celebrate the “Yes’s”! The only way to fail is to quit.
